In order for Mrs. Davenport’s class to experience the difference between narrative (stories) and expository writing (how-to-projects), the speech clinician, Mary Kilcher, collaborated with the kindergarteners to present TURKEY CONFIDENTIAL on Friday, November 20, 2009. The project began with Mrs. Davenport reading: ONE TOUGH TURKEY. This story tells how the turkeys outsmarted the Pilgrims on that first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims really had squash. Later Mrs. Kilcher brought in pictures of real turkeys. The children learned that tom turkeys have spurs and beards. Next the students worked through a sequential visual presentation that constructed a table top turkey. Lastly, the students compared their turkeys to wild turkeys. The students found similarities. However, they noticed a BIG difference. They will not be eating any paper turkeys this Thanksgiving.
