Taken from the Kansas Board of Regents website located at http://www.kansasregents.org/qa/standards.html The Kansas Board of Regents recently revised their admissions policy. Three things to consider in this revision: Computer technology is eliminated from the precollege curriculum for students graguating from high school in 2010 and after Mathematics courses may be completed in seventh through twelfth grade for students graduating in 2010 and after For students graduating in 2014 and thereafter, at least one mathematics course must be completed in the twelfth grade.
Kansas students who wish to be admitted to any of six Kansas state universities must follow a set curriculum as introduced by the Kansas Board of Regents. From the KBR website:
"State of Kansas students must meet the following requirements to be guaranteed admission to any of the six Kansas State universities: •Graduate from an accredited high school; AND • Achieve an ACT composite score of 21 or above (or SAT score of 980); OR • Rank in the top one-third of the high school graduating class; OR, • Complete the Qualified Admissions curriculum with at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. What are the curriculum specifications? English 4 approved units required At least one unit of English or language arts must be taken each year of high school. In addition to this requirement, students are encouraged to take courses in journalism, speech, drama/theater, and/or debate. These courses do not count toward the English requirement. Natural Science 3 approved units required from the following courses:
• Biology (1 unit) • Advanced Biology (2nd Year Biology) (1 unit) • Earth/Space Science (1 unit) • Chemistry** (1 unit) • Physics** (1 unit) • Principles of Technology** (CORD Curriculum) (1 unit)
Students are encouraged to take one additional unit of science chosen from the courses listed above. **At least one unit must be in chemistry or physics Math 3 approved units required in high school at or above the level of Algebra 1. Mathematics courses completed in middle school or junior high will not count toward the Qualified Admissions math requirement. Students are strongly encouraged to take a mathematics course every year of high school.
For students graduating in 2010 and thereafter 3 approved units are required in high school and selected from: • Algebra I • Geometry • Algebra II • Any mathematics course that has Algebra II as a prerequisite.
Social Sciences Minimum of 3 approved units required • One Unit of U.S. History • Minimum of one-half unit of U.S. Government
Minimum of one-half unit selected from: • World History • World Geography • International Relations
Up to one unit selected from:
• Psychology • Economics • U.S. Government • U.S. History • Current Social Issues • Sociology • Anthropology • Race and Ethnic Group Relations
Computer Technology 1 unit required A one-half unit course may not be used to fulfill more than one requirement. The new regulations are temporary because public input must be gathered before regulations become permanent. A publich hearing will be held on Setp 24, 2009, at 10am at the Kansas Board of Regents office.
