This is a very important time in the education funding for the state of Kansas. We face grim times and cuts are being made statewide to all schools, and the worse part is I don't believe our legislature cares to much. I understand that K-12 education is 52% of the state budget, but you know what it should be. What more important service can our government provide than a quality education for each Kansas student? I have not been a very political person and shame on me for that, the time has come for everyone to speak up in regard to funding for their schools. The legislative leaders say they are tired of hearing from administrators about the budget concerns. So we are calling on everyone else to make your feelings known. Education must remain a priority for our state leaders. None of us like taxes, however, there is only one way for government to raise revenue. The part that is so upsetting is our leaders knew in 2005 they would be $400 million short in 2009. This is caused by tax exemptions and rollbacks mainly for big business, not individuals. The legislature cannot blame the recession because in 2005 there was no recession, yet they kept their spending levels the same knowing revenue would not be there, is this responsible governing? Instead of doing something to raise revenue their answer has been to cut, cut, and cut some more. THIS IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE! Please join me in contacting your legislator and encouraging them to support your public school, because we do have an alternative, we cast votes. |
